A ChatGPT alternative that keeps your work on your machine
For offices that like what ChatGPT does but cannot send client files to it — or need figures they can reproduce and a record of every run.
Short answer
If you want ChatGPT-style help without sending client files to a cloud service, run a model locally through an open-source app. OpenClerq is one built for clerical work: it runs on your Mac or PC, uses a local model through Ollama or LM Studio or a cloud model under your own key, and does calculations in a deterministic engine rather than the model. ChatGPT remains the better tool for research, browsing and working directly with PDFs and images.
We build OpenClerq, which appears on this page. We have tried to describe every tool fairly and to say where another one is the better choice. Facts checked 19 September 2026; if something is wrong, open an issue.
Why offices look for a ChatGPT alternative
- Client data leaves the building. Every prompt and file goes to OpenAI's servers. Professional confidentiality rules or client contracts may not allow that.
- Consumer defaults. On Free, Plus and Pro plans, conversations are used for training unless each user switches it off. Staff on personal accounts are the usual leak.
- Numbers you cannot reproduce. Ask twice, and a figure can come back different. See why AI gets numbers wrong.
- No record per task. A chat history is not an audit trail of which model produced which figure, at what cost.
- One vendor's models. You cannot route a task to a cheaper or a local model.
OpenClerq vs ChatGPT at a glance
| OpenClerq | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your Mac or PC; the gateway listens on 127.0.0.1 only | OpenAI's cloud, through web, desktop and mobile apps |
| Models | Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Z.ai, MiniMax — or local through Ollama and LM Studio | OpenAI's models |
| Works offline | Yes, with a local model | No |
| Training on your data | None by OpenClerq; cloud providers under their API terms | On by default on consumer plans (can be switched off); off by default on Business and Enterprise |
| Calculations | Deterministic Rust engine with a proof hash per result | The model, sometimes running code in the background |
| Record of work | Every run with its steps, model, tokens and cost | Conversation history |
| Recurring tasks | Cron, file-watch and webhook triggers on your machine | — |
| Files | Plain-text files from one folder you choose; no PDFs yet | PDFs, spreadsheets, images and more |
| Web browsing | No | Yes |
| Platforms | macOS, Windows | Web, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android |
| Price | Free and MIT-licensed; you pay your model provider, or nothing with a local model | Free tier and paid plans |
| Source code | Open | Closed |
When ChatGPT is the better choice
- Research that needs the web, with sources.
- Working directly with PDFs, scans, images and spreadsheets.
- Voice, mobile, and zero setup for non-technical colleagues.
- The strongest models out of the box, with nothing to install or maintain.
If your data is not sensitive, or your firm has a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise plan that meets its obligations, ChatGPT is simply easier. Many offices will use both.
When OpenClerq is the better choice
- Client data must stay on your machine. With a local model, nothing is uploaded, and context preview shows exactly what a cloud model would receive before anything is sent.
- Figures must be reproducible. Formulas run in a deterministic engine that returns a proof record; the model explains the result.
- You want to choose the model per task — and compare up to eight on the same message, with latency, tokens and cost for each.
- You need a record. Every run is stored with its steps and cost.
- The same check runs every week. Schedules, watched files and webhooks run it without anyone remembering.
- You want to own the software. MIT-licensed; read it, change it, build on it.
Switching: a practical path
- List what your team uses ChatGPT for in a normal week.
- Sort the list by sensitivity. Only the confidential work has to move.
- Install OpenClerq and a local model. See how to run AI locally for office work.
- Run twenty real tasks through comparison mode — the local model beside a cloud model — and note which tasks the local one handles.
- Move recurring calculations into formulas in the calculation engine.
- Keep ChatGPT for what it is better at. Write down which kind of work goes where.
What OpenClerq does not do yet
OpenClerq is at release 0.5. It does not read PDFs or images, browse the web, or run on phones. Agents that act — opening files and calling other systems on their own, inside a sandbox and a policy engine — arrive in release 0.6. Linux packages are planned for 1.0. It is supplied as is, without warranty. The roadmap lists what comes when.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free ChatGPT alternative that runs offline?
Yes. Open-source apps such as OpenClerq, Jan, GPT4All and AnythingLLM run open-weight models on your own computer, and LM Studio is free for home and work use though not open source. See the best local AI apps.
Can I use OpenAI models inside OpenClerq?
Yes. Set your OPENAI_API_KEY and choose the openai provider. Requests go through OpenAI's API, which OpenAI does not use for training by default, and each call is recorded with its tokens and cost.
Does OpenClerq replace ChatGPT Business?
Not entirely. It has no web browsing, file uploads, mobile apps or team administration. It replaces ChatGPT for work that must stay on your machine, needs exact figures, or has to run on a schedule.
Is OpenClerq safe to use with client data?
It is built for that: the gateway binds to your own machine and requires a token, its files are readable only by your user, and a local model keeps prompts on the computer. It is early software without a warranty, so read its security notes and keep a person on every decision.
